North East Reviews was set up in 2014 by the North East Artist Development Network to increase the amount of critical writing around new performance work in the region.

An open call was made via our artist and audience networks for reviewers, who were asked to submit applications outlining their experience together with a sample review. Ten reviewers were chosen for the scheme, who are each expected to review up to three shows over the next 12 months. You can read more about them here. A small contribution to their time and expenses is made by the Network.

The scheme is initially funded for 12 months.

North East artists and companies are encouraged to submit requests for reviews – click here for more details. Whilst not every request can be met, selection is based on the following criteria:

  • Whether the work is really ‘new’
  • Likelihood of mainstream review
  • Geographical spread across the scheme
  • Benefit of having the work reviewed for future life of show/company

Priority is given to shows being presented at venues who are members of the Network.
